The products at the center of the Ole Miss tragedy were not natural kratom
Concern on the University of Mississippi campus has centered on concentrated 7‑hydroxymitragynine (7‑OH) products — lab-made, high-potency pills and shots sold in gas stations and smoke shops — not the natural kratom leaf that has been used safely for generations. Toxicology in individual cases is still pending, but the FDA and the American Kratom Association have both warned that synthetic 7‑OH is a fundamentally different, far more dangerous product than the plant it is derived from.
